In this article from Chalkbeat, I weigh in on the recent announcement that New York City will receive $30 million in federal funding for six new magnet high schools in Manhattan and the Bronx. Despite a long history of public school choice, the city has not had many (if any?) federally designated magnet high schools. It does, however, have many themed high schools—some with “diverse by design” admissions policies—that are magnet schools in all but name. This new grant recognizes the city’s ongoing efforts to attract and retain a diverse student population.
